MAP
Urikaruus
The camp is situated in the dry bed of the Aroab River, near a waterhole,
which is excellent for game viewing! The camp is built on 2m high
poles. Each unit has two storeys. The kitchen, dining facilities
and a terrace with barbeque facilities are below while the bedroom,
toilet and shower are on the second storey.
Kielie Krankie
Favoured as one of the most beautiful wilderness camps. The 4
double units are nestled on the top of a typical red Kalahari
sand dune. Each unit is fully equipped and the terrace with barbeque
facilities, being part of the unit, is built on poles on the slope
of the dune. This provides you with a magnificent view over the
whole Kalahari sand dune landscape and also the waterhole at the
bottom of the dune.
Grootkolk
This wilderness camp is situated in the far north of the Park
in the dry Nossob riverbed, providing the ideal site for game
viewing. The landscape of the Kalahari is different to the southern
part in many ways. In these parts the vegetation and trees are
denser, creating a unique possibility for you to come across various
species of antelopes, like kudu, ect. – attracted to the nearby
waterhole. The presence of these antelope lures predators, like
the black-maned Kalahari lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Gharagab
This wilderness camp is only reachable with a 4x4 vehicle and
lies in the most northern corner of the Park. The peace and quiet
of Gharagab is balsam to your soul. It lends the ideal surroundings
to help you escape from your normally strenuous lifestyle and
become one with nature. Leaving the normal travel routes enables
your guide to unveil to you nature's small secrets, which lies
hidden in the red Kalahari sand. In this way you will be enlightened
on the plants used as medicine and remedies by the real children
of the Kalahari, the San Bushmen, over centuries. Uninformed tourists
travelling on their own will not easily experience this unique
discovery.
Bitterpan
Amongst all wilderness camps, maybe my very own personal favourite!
Bitterpan lies in the centre of the dune fields and is only reachable
with a 4x4 vehicle. The drive to Bitterpan is an adventure on
its own because many sand dunes have to be crossed. The camp itself
lies on the brim of a saltpan. The saltpan plays an important
role in providing the animals with salt and minerals. The camp
also has a 4m high lookout from where you have a magnificent view
over the waterhole and saltpan below. The unique building-style
of the Bitterpan camp won the National Architectural Award prize
in 2002.
